Spent layers are female chickens that are no longer producing eggs at a sufficient rate to be considered commercially viable. This typically occurs after a chicken has been laying eggs for about a year or so, although the exact age at which a chicken becomes a spent layer can vary.
In a commercial egg production setting, spent layers are often sold for meat or disposed of, as it is more cost-effective for the farmer to replace them with younger, more productive birds.
Our spent layers are well-cared for and treated and very healthy.
